How to browse and resume Claude Code, Codex & OpenCode sessions in VS Code

Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, and Cursor each keep their session history in a different place on disk. Portaterm's AI Coding Vault lists them together inside VS Code or Cursor, shows you the whole conversation, and resumes it in a terminal with one double-click.

1. Open the AI Vault

Install Portaterm, open its view, and click Open AI Vault in the panel header — or run Portaterm: Open AI Vault from the Command Palette.

The list starts scoped to the folder of the terminal you are in (This folder only). If that folder has no sessions, click Show all sessions.

2. Find the session

3. Preview it

Click a row, or press Enter or Space, to open a floating preview: the first prompt, a timeline of tool and sub-agent steps, the latest reply, and message, token, cost, and tool counts. Hover the token count for a per-model breakdown.

To share a session, use the export button in the preview header to save its timeline as a Markdown file — handy for a PR description.

4. Resume it

Double-click the row, or right-click it and choose Resume. The session continues in a Portaterm terminal tab.

Where the data comes from

The Vault reads each tool's own local store — honoring CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR, CODEX_HOME, and XDG_DATA_HOME — and nothing is sent off your machine. Stars, tags, and custom names are kept by Portaterm in the editor's storage, never written into an agent's files. A tool that isn't installed simply shows no sessions.

Bonus: Claude Code comes back after a restart

When you quit the editor with Claude Code running in a Portaterm tab, that tab resumes the conversation by itself on the next start. Set portaterm.sessionRestore.resumeClaude to pinned or off to limit this. See session restore.

Next: put the terminal in the sidebar, secondary sidebar, or an editor tab.
